This pottery originates in a dusty little village between a branch of the Casas Grande river and the Chihuahua Al Pacifico railway in Mexico. People refer to the pottery as "Mata Ortiz" after the village where it originated and was established as a legitimate art movement when there was an exhibition at the Museum of Man Museum in San Diego, California, in 1997.
